I was the stereotypical straight-laced Asian kid with good grades from the suburbs of Queens. It was probably around middle school when I first heard the hypnotic head bobbing beats of hiphop. Although I was far, far away from the “streets,” the music still spoke to me. One of my earliest hiphop memories was rushing my parents to get me home in time to tape Pete Rock & Marley Marl’s Future Flavas show on Hot 97. Ever since then I’ve embraced hiphop culture as a part of my identity and it has shaped who I’ve become.
